History
Punjab, the heartland of Pakistan, boasts a rich history that spans thousands of years, shaped by its fertile lands and strategic location. Known as the “Land of Five Rivers” due to the Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas rivers,
it was the cradle of the ancient Indus Valley Civilization, with prominent sites like Harappa. Punjab has been a crossroads for numerous empires, including the Mauryans, Guptas, Kushans, and Mughals, leaving a legacy of architectural marvels and cultural richness. The region saw the rise of Sikhism in the 15th century, with its spiritual center in Amritsar before the partition of 1947.
Geography
Punjab, the most populous province of Pakistan, is located in the northeastern region of the country and is known as the “Land of Five Rivers.” The province derives its name from the Persian words panj (five) and ab (water), referring to the rivers Jhelum, Chenab, Ravi, Sutlej, and Beas, which flow through its fertile plains. Punjab’s geography is characterized by its vast agricultural lands, rolling plains, and a network of canals that make it Pakistan’s breadbasket. The Indus River, one of the most significant waterways, flows along its western border.
